Best booking paths for Mexico

#1 Best Hotel
World of Hyatt — Hyatt Ziva or Zilara Cancun
The Hyatt Ziva and Zilara Cancun are all-inclusive resorts that run 20,000–25,000 Hyatt points per night. The cash rate is typically $400–$600+ per night with food and drink included. At 20,000 points for a room worth $500 all-in, you get ~2.5¢ per point. Chase UR and Bilt both transfer to Hyatt at 1:1. Currently +30% Chase UR → Hyatt bonus through May 6.
20k–25k/nt all-inclusiveChase UR → Hyatt+30% bonus now~2.5¢/pt
#2 Budget Flights
American Airlines AAdvantage MileSAAver
American Airlines uses fixed MileSAAver pricing for Mexico. Economy one-way is 12,500–17,500 miles depending on route. Citi ThankYou and Bilt both transfer to AAdvantage at 1:1. No fuel surcharges on domestic/Mexico American flights.
12.5k–17.5k OW EcoCiti TY → AAdvantageBilt → AAdvantageNo surcharges
#3 Flexible Flights
Chase UR → United MileagePlus
Chase UR transfers to United at 1:1. United has good Mexico coverage with dynamic pricing — saver availability at 10,000–15,000 miles one-way economy is possible but not guaranteed. Best as a flexible fallback.
10k–20k OW EcoChase UR → UnitedDynamic pricing~1.4¢/pt
#4 Wyndham All-Inclusive
Wyndham Rewards — Cancun & Riviera Maya
Capital One transfers to Wyndham at 1:1. Wyndham has extensive all-inclusive coverage in Cancun and the Riviera Maya at 15,000–30,000 points per night. Lower redemption value than Hyatt but much wider availability and easier to book.
15k–30k/ntCap1 → WyndhamWide Cancun coverage~1.2¢/pt

Insider tips for Mexico award travel

Tip 01 — All-inclusive hotel math
All-inclusive properties are where Mexico points shine. Hyatt Ziva Cancun at 20,000–25,000 points per night includes all food, drinks, and activities. A 5-night stay at $500/night cash = $2,500. At 25,000 pts/nt = 125,000 Hyatt points = about $62.5/night in point cost. Best CPP in the Caribbean for Hyatt.
Tip 02 — Active bonus: Chase UR → Hyatt +30%
There is a 30% Chase UR → Hyatt bonus through May 6, 2026. For a 5-night Hyatt Ziva stay at 20,000 points/night = 100,000 Hyatt points normally. With the bonus: transfer 76,924 Chase UR → 100,000 Hyatt points. A saving of 23,076 Chase UR.
Tip 03 — Currency and payment
Always pay in Mexican Pesos, not USD, when given the choice. Dynamic currency conversion adds 3–7%. At ATMs: decline the conversion offer and choose MXN. Use a no-foreign-transaction-fee Visa or Mastercard for restaurant and hotel charges.
Tip 04 — Flight timing
Mexico flights from the US are relatively cheap in cash ($200–$400 RT) — sometimes it is better to pay cash for flights and save points for hotels. Run the comparison: what is your cash flight cost vs. the award cost at 1.5¢/pt?
Tip 05 — Bilt for AAdvantage
Bilt Mastercard transfers to American Airlines AAdvantage at 1:1 with no annual fee. If you pay rent, Bilt is one of the easiest ways to accumulate AAdvantage miles for Mexico flights without paying an airline card annual fee.
Tip 06 — Cabo vs Cancun
Los Cabos (SJD) has less award hotel coverage than Cancun. Hyatt has strong Cancun presence (Ziva, Zilara, Andaz). For Cabo, check Hilton (Conrad Los Cabos) or Marriott options. Hyatt Ziva Los Cabos is an option but typically books for more points than Cancun.

Mexico Award Travel FAQ

What is the best credit card for Mexico travel?

The Chase Sapphire Preferred is the best all-around Mexico card. Chase UR transfers to Hyatt for Cancun all-inclusive resorts (currently +30% bonus through May 6) and to United for flexible flights. Bilt Mastercard is the best no-fee option — it transfers to both Hyatt and American Airlines.

What is the best hotel points program for Cancun?

World of Hyatt offers the best value for Cancun — Hyatt Ziva and Zilara are all-inclusive resorts running 20,000–25,000 points per night versus $400–$600+ cash including all meals and drinks. At that ratio, Hyatt Cancun delivers ~2.0–2.5¢ per point. There is currently a 30% Chase UR → Hyatt bonus through May 6.

How many miles does a flight to Mexico cost?

American Airlines MileSAAver pricing: 12,500 miles one-way economy from most US hubs to Cancun (CUN). Los Cabos (SJD) and Mexico City (MEX) run 12,500–17,500 miles one-way. United dynamic pricing runs 10,000–20,000 depending on availability.

Should I pay cash or points for Mexico flights?

Mexico flights are relatively inexpensive in cash ($200–$400 RT). The math often favors paying cash for the flight and saving points for hotels — especially when Hyatt all-inclusive redemptions deliver 2.0–2.5¢ per point. Use the calculator above to compare.

Do I need to tip with a credit card in Mexico?

Yes — tip in local currency (MXN) when possible. Many all-inclusive properties have a no-tipping policy for included services. For taxi, non-included restaurants, and local excursions, 10–20% tip in MXN is standard.

What is the best card for paying in Mexico?

Any no-foreign-transaction-fee Visa or Mastercard. The Chase Sapphire Preferred (0% FTF) and Capital One Venture X (0% FTF) are good choices. Avoid using cards with 3% foreign transaction fees abroad — on a $3,000 Mexico trip that is $90 wasted.
