Best booking paths for London

#1 Best Value
British Airways Avios — off-peak zone pricing
British Airways uses zone-based Avios pricing. Off-peak economy from the US East Coast to LHR runs 27,500 Avios one-way; West Coast runs 33,000. Peak pricing is 33,000–38,500. Chase UR and Amex MR transfer to Avios at 1:1. Fuel surcharges apply on BA metal — typically $150–$250 per person one-way in economy.

#2 No Surcharges
Air Canada Aeroplan on Air Canada, United & Star Alliance
Aeroplan books Air Canada, United and Star Alliance flights to London (not BA or Virgin) without fuel surcharges. Partner business runs 60,000 points one-way from the East Coast (75,000 from farther away). Economy 32,500–42,500. Chase UR and Capital One both transfer to Aeroplan at 1:1.
~60k OW BizChase UR → AeroplanNo fuel surcharges~1.7¢/pt
#3 Budget Eco
Flying Blue via CDG — Promo Rewards months
Flying Blue Promo Rewards sometimes feature London (LHR/LGW) or nearby CDG, reducing economy to ~20,000 miles one-way. Amex MR and Chase UR both transfer 1:1. Check the live panel for any current Amex MR → Flying Blue bonus.

#4 Hotel Value
IHG One Rewards — InterContinental London
Chase UR transfers to IHG at 1:1. The InterContinental London Park Lane runs roughly 70,000–160,000 IHG points (dynamic) versus $400–$600+ cash. IHG has the best central London hotel coverage of any points program, but lower value per point (~0.7¢) than Hyatt.

Insider tips for London award travel

Tip 01 — Avios off-peak pricing
British Airways Avios uses off-peak and peak pricing. Off-peak dates (most of winter, early spring, late fall) run 27,500 Avios OW economy from the East Coast. Check the BA off-peak calendar before booking — the difference is 5,500 (economy) to 11,000 (business) Avios per person.
Tip 02 — Aeroplan for surcharge-free
Fuel surcharges on BA metal run ~$400–$500+ one-way in business. Aeroplan can't book BA, but books Air Canada/United to London without surcharges. Chase UR and Capital One both transfer to Aeroplan at 1:1.
Tip 03 — Active bonuses now
Check the live panel above for current transfer bonuses before moving points.
Tip 04 — Card payment tips
Cards are accepted everywhere including the London Underground (contactless Visa/MC works for the Tube). Amex has lower acceptance at pubs and smaller shops — carry a Visa/MC backup. GBP, not EUR.
Tip 05 — Hotel strategy
Hyatt is the best value per point: Andaz London Liverpool Street, Great Scotland Yard and Hyatt Regency London The Churchill are Category 6 (20,000–40,000 a night), and Park Hyatt London River Thames is Category 8. IHG has the widest central London coverage at lower value (~0.7¢ a point). Marriott and Hilton also have central properties.
Tip 06 — Heathrow vs Gatwick
LHR has significantly more award availability than LGW. Most transatlantic award seats land at Terminal 3 or 5 (British Airways). Budget for the Heathrow Express (~£25 one-way) or Elizabeth Line (~£15.50) to central London.

London Award Travel FAQ

What is the best credit card for London travel?

The Chase Sapphire Preferred and Amex Platinum are the best London travel cards. Both transfer to British Airways Avios at 1:1 for direct LHR flights. For surcharge-free bookings, Chase UR and Capital One both transfer to Air Canada Aeroplan, which books Air Canada and United flights to London without fuel surcharges.

How many Avios does it cost to fly to London?

Off-peak economy from the US East Coast to London Heathrow costs 27,500 Avios one-way. Peak pricing is 33,000. West Coast off-peak is 33,000. Business class one-way runs 88,000–110,000 Avios depending on peak/off-peak and routing.

What are fuel surcharges on British Airways award flights?

British Airways charges fuel surcharges (called “carrier-imposed charges”) on BA-operated flights. Economy surcharges run $100–$250 one-way; business class ~$400–$500+. Aeroplan can't book BA or Virgin, but has no surcharges on Air Canada/United flights to London.

What hotel points are best for London?

IHG One Rewards has the widest central London coverage — InterContinental London Park Lane and multiple Holiday Inn Express properties. Chase UR transfers to IHG at 1:1. Hyatt has fewer London properties but better value: Andaz Liverpool Street and Hyatt Regency The Churchill are Category 6 (20,000–40,000 points a night).

Can I use my credit card on the London Tube?

Yes. Contactless Visa and Mastercard work directly on the Underground — tap in and out at the barriers like an Oyster card. American Express contactless cards are also accepted on the Tube. Daily and weekly fare caps apply automatically when using contactless.

When should I book London award flights?

British Airways opens award space 355 days in advance. Economy off-peak space is generally available year-round. Business class on popular summer dates fills quickly — search at the 355-day mark. December is surprisingly affordable in Avios; summer (July–August) is most expensive.
