How the Rewards Calculator Works

This calculator estimates the annual value of rewards based on the monthly spending amounts you enter — groceries, dining, gas, travel, housing, online shopping, streaming, Disney, and everyday purchases. It compares eligible live cards and identifies which single card or multi-card combination produces the highest overall value after annual fees.

In many cases, a two-card or three-card setup can improve category coverage and increase total yearly rewards compared to a single card.

Single Card vs. Multi-Card Strategy

A single-card strategy is simpler and can still be a great fit if you want one primary account, lower complexity, or a lower combined annual fee. A two- or three-card strategy tends to be more valuable when spending is spread across multiple categories with different bonus structures.

For example, one card may lead for groceries and dining while another wins on gas, housing, or travel. The best combination depends on your spending profile and reward preference.

How Much Can Rewards Be Worth?

The value depends on your spending and the cards you use. Small changes in category strategy can make a meaningful difference over a full year — especially with steady grocery, dining, fuel, housing, and travel spending.

All estimates in this calculator subtract annual fees so you can directly compare premium and lower-fee setups based on your own numbers.

Frequently Asked Questions

How does the rewards calculator work?

Enter your average monthly spending by category. The calculator values each live card’s earn rates at our published point values, applies bonus caps, subtracts the effective annual fee, and ranks cards — and 2- and 3-card combinations — by net annual value for your numbers. Results update as you change your spending.

Is it better to use one card or multiple?

One card is simpler. Two or three cards often earn more when your spending is spread across categories with different bonus rates. In a combo, each category is assigned to the card that earns the most on it, and a combo is only shown if every card in it is actually used. Points vs. cash back explained →

What is the best card for groceries, dining, or rent?

It depends on your spending level, the annual fee, and whether you want points or cash back. Airline and hotel spend is scored separately from general travel so co-brand cards rank correctly. Rent only earns on cards that reward rent without a fee (Bilt), because most landlords charge about 3% to pay by card. Best grocery card guide →

Does the calculator subtract annual fees?

Yes. Every result is shown after annual fees. For premium cards, our estimate of the statement credits you would realistically use is subtracted from the fee first (the effective fee), and the card’s details show both numbers.

How are points valued?

Points are valued at our blended point values, for example Chase Ultimate Rewards, Amex Membership Rewards and Bilt at 1.5¢, Citi ThankYou and Capital One miles at 1.35¢, and cash back at 1¢. Rotating 5% categories are counted for one quarter a year, and store or fuel cards are only suggested for their own category. Actual value depends on how you redeem. Our methodology →

Is the calculator free and independent?

Yes. It’s free with no sign-up, and compensation never changes the order, so rankings are based only on your numbers and the card terms.
