Which Retailer Do You Shop Most?

Store cards win at their own store but earn nothing elsewhere. Pick a retailer and we’ll show the best co-branded card versus the best everyday card you can use anywhere — plus the gotchas (deferred interest, closed-loop, membership) most sites skip.

Co-branded vs closed-loop

A co-branded card (Amazon Prime Visa, Costco Citi, Target Mastercard) works anywhere that network is accepted. A closed-loop store card (Amazon Store Card, most Home Depot/Best Buy cards) only works at that retailer. Co-branded is almost always the better keeper.

Compare flexible cash back cards
When a store card wins

At stores excluded from bonus categories — Target, Walmart, warehouse clubs — a general card earns just 1%, so a 5%-off or 3–5% store card wins outright. At supermarkets and gas, a 6% or 4% general card usually still beats the store card.

Best card for Costco members
Watch these gotchas
  • Deferred interest — many store-financing cards back-charge all interest if not paid in full by the promo end
  • Closed-loop — store-only cards are useless everywhere else
  • Membership — Costco & Sam’s cards need a paid club membership
  • Points ≠ cash — Disney & Best Buy pay in store-only rewards, not cash
  • Network — Costco is Visa-only; Amex is not accepted

Store & Retail Card FAQ

Are store credit cards worth it?

Sometimes. At stores excluded from bonus categories — Target, Walmart, warehouse clubs — a store card’s 3–5% easily beats the 1% a general card earns there. But store cards usually earn nothing elsewhere, so they’re a supplement to a flexible 2% card, not a replacement. Skip closed-loop cards that rely on deferred-interest financing unless you always pay in full.

What’s the best card for Amazon purchases?

The Amazon Prime Visa earns 5% at Amazon.com and Whole Foods with no card fee, as long as you have Prime. Without Prime you earn 3% on that card. The Amazon Prime Store Card also earns 5% but is closed-loop (Amazon.com only), so the Prime Visa — a real Visa you can use anywhere — is the better keeper.

What’s the best card for Costco?

Costco only takes Visa. The Costco Anywhere Visa by Citi earns 4% on gas (up to $7,000/yr), 3% on dining and travel, and 2% at Costco — the best card for members. Amex is not accepted at Costco. Among non-Costco cards, the BoA Customized Cash Rewards explicitly covers “wholesale clubs” at 2%. Full Costco card guide →

What is deferred interest, and why does it matter?

Many store-financing cards (Best Buy, Home Depot, furniture and electronics retailers) advertise “no interest if paid in full within 12 months.” If you leave even $1 unpaid at the deadline, they charge all the interest retroactively from the purchase date — often 25–30% APR. Only use these if you’re certain you’ll clear the full balance in time; otherwise a flat 2% card is far safer.

Store card vs co-branded card — what’s the difference?

A closed-loop store card only works at that one retailer (e.g., Amazon Store Card). A co-branded card carries a Visa, Mastercard, or Amex logo and works anywhere that network is accepted, while still earning a bonus at its home store (e.g., Amazon Prime Visa, Costco Anywhere Visa, Target Mastercard). Co-branded cards are more flexible and usually the better long-term keeper.

Do store cards help build credit?

Yes. Most store and co-branded cards report to the three major bureaus, so on-time payments build history. Store cards are often easier to qualify for than premium rewards cards, making them a common first card. Just keep utilization low and always pay in full to avoid the high APRs these cards typically carry. How credit scoring works →

What’s the best card for Target?

The Target Circle Card (formerly RedCard) takes 5% off almost all Target purchases at checkout — better than any cash-back card, since Target codes as a discount store and earns just 1% on most cards. The 5% is an instant discount, not rewards, and only works at Target. A Mastercard version exists for use elsewhere at 1–2%.

Can I use a store card anywhere?

Only if it’s co-branded. Cards with a Visa/Mastercard/Amex logo (Amazon Prime Visa, Costco Anywhere Visa, Sam’s Club Mastercard, Kroger World Elite Mastercard) work anywhere that network is accepted. Closed-loop cards (Amazon Store Card, many Best Buy and Home Depot cards) only work at the issuing retailer. Check for a network logo before assuming a card works everywhere.
