General information, not financial advice. Program rules, ratios and fees change: confirm on the program’s or issuer’s own site before you transfer points or apply. Transfers are usually one-way and cannot be reversed.
Rules that matter across the border
- Amex MR Canada vs US. Membership Rewards points stay on the account that earned them. Amex's Global Card Relationship page says you redeem on that existing account only, and says nothing about merging or moving points between countries. Treat Canadian and US MR as separate programs. Quote: "continue to keep, and redeem rewards through this current and existing account only" source (October 7, 2026)
- Amex Global Transfer. Cardholders moving between countries can apply for a local card (Canada is listed) while signed in; Amex may use account history for the decision and you may keep the original Member Since date. Existing cards stay open until you cancel. Quote: "We may use your Account history to make a decision on your application" source (October 7, 2026)
- Amex MR Canada vs US. Partner lists and ratios differ by country on Amex's own pages: Canada shows 8 partners (Hilton 1:1, Marriott 1:1.2, Delta 1:0.75, Asia Miles 1:0.75) while the US list shows 20 partners (Hilton 1:2, Marriott 1:1, Delta 1:1, Asia Miles 1:0.8). Quote: "1,000 Membership Rewards® points = | 1,200 Marriott Bonvoy points" source (October 7, 2026)
- Aeroplan pooling. Aeroplan Family Sharing lets up to 8 verified members combine points in a shared balance while keeping separate accounts. All of a member's points go in, and the lead must be 18+ with a 6-month-old account. Quote: "Up to 8 Verified Family Members can join together to share points" source (October 7, 2026)
- Aeroplan pooling. Joining or starting a new pool requires a 6-month wait; members must stay at least 3 months. Transfers to an Aeroplan member outside the pool still carry a fee. Quote: "You must wait 6 months before joining or starting a new family sharing pool." source (October 7, 2026)
- Chase UR transfers. Chase UR transfers to airline programs go only to accounts belonging to you (or an authorized user on your account), in 1,000-point increments, and are final. Quote: "only to participating frequent flyer program accounts belonging to you" source (October 7, 2026)
- Capital One transfers. To send Capital One miles to Aeroplan you need an eligible Capital One rewards card issued in the United States, per Aeroplan's page. Quote: "issued in the United States, to transfer miles" source (October 7, 2026)
- Capital One transfers. Capital One requires the name on the Capital One account to match the loyalty program account name. Minimum transfer is 1,000 miles and transfers cannot be reversed. Quote: "name on your Capital One account also has to match" source (October 7, 2026)
- Marriott Bonvoy global program. Marriott's terms allow each individual only one Bonvoy account, with no joint or shared accounts even within a household. Duplicates must be combined, and points cannot be moved between a person's own accounts. Whether CA-issued and US-issued cards credit the same account is not stated by Marriott; link the same Bonvoy number. Quote: "each individual may maintain only one Membership Account" source (October 7, 2026)
- Marriott Bonvoy airline conversion. Converting Bonvoy points to airline miles generally requires the Bonvoy account name and the airline account name to match. Quote: "account name and airline frequent flyer program account name must match" source (October 7, 2026)
- Hilton Honors global program. Hilton's terms prohibit multiple Honors accounts per member; duplicates may be merged into one account with one points balance. Terms are issued by Hilton Honors Worldwide, LLC. Quote: "Members must not maintain Membership in or earn Points on multiple accounts." source (October 7, 2026)
- Hilton Honors pooling. Hilton points pooling and transfers between members are subject to a waiting period for new members (30 days with activity, 90 days regardless). Quote: "can pool, transfer, or receive Points thirty (30) days after enrollment" source (October 7, 2026)
- RBC Avion conversion. RBC's Avion Visa Infinite FAQ names the conversion partners as AAdvantage, British Airways Avios and WestJet. Quote: "AAdvantage miles, British Airways Avios and WestJet points" source (October 7, 2026)
- Air Miles status. The AIR MILES program in Canada has transitioned to Blue Rewards (run with BMO). The old airmiles.ca address redirects to bluerewards.ca. The site says converting points with other programs is coming soon, not yet available. Quote: "The AIR MILES® program has transitioned to Blue Rewards." source (October 7, 2026)
- Air Miles status. Blue Rewards' own homepage lists converting points with other programs as coming soon, so no Air Miles/Blue Rewards to Avios or Aeroplan path is recorded. Quote: "Coming soon: Convert your points or earn extra with participating programs." source (October 7, 2026)
- Scene+. Scene+ says you can share points with friends or family by calling Member Services. No airline conversion was found in the help centre search results read. Quote: "Share your points with friends or family members by calling Scene+ Member Services" source (October 7, 2026)
- Nova Credit. Nova Credit's own site now describes Credit Passport as a lender-facing product that translates international credit data (more than 20 countries) into a local equivalent. The page read does not name Canada or offer a consumer sign-up. Quote: "access to up to 2.8 billion credit records in more than 20 countries" source (October 7, 2026)
- Foreign currency fees. Scotiabank advertises its Passport Visa Infinite + with no foreign transaction fees. Quote: "No foreign transaction fees" source (October 7, 2026)
- Foreign currency fees. Rogers Bank's Red Mastercard fee table lists a 2.50% foreign currency conversion fee. Quote: "Foreign currency conversion | 2.50%" source (October 7, 2026)
- Foreign currency fees. TD says its U.S. Dollar Visa has no foreign currency conversion fees on purchases or bills paid in U.S. dollars (annual fee US$39). RBC's US Dollar Visa Gold is pitched as saving on foreign exchange fees. Quote: "No foreign currency conversion fees when you shop or pay for bills in U.S. dollars" source (October 7, 2026)
- RBC USD card. RBC U.S. Dollar Visa Gold earns 1 Avion point per US$1 and says eligible Avion members can convert points to other programs including WestJet. Quote: "Earn 1 Avion point for every U.S. $1 you spend" source (October 7, 2026)
- Aeroplan inbound conversion. Points moved from Amex MR into Aeroplan cannot be moved back. Aeroplan lists US Amex MR, Chase UR, Capital One, Barclays and Diners Club among its inbound sources. source (October 7, 2026)
- RBC Avion conversion. RBC says Avion points convert to airline programs only for Avion Elite or Avion Premium members, and the conversion needs a Personal Avion Account. Partners and ratios are in the table above (Avion program terms, 03/2026). source (October 7, 2026)
- Citi ThankYou. Citi's own ThankYou FAQ lists its airline transfer partners (Aeromexico, American, Avianca LifeMiles, Cathay Pacific Asia Miles, Emirates, Etihad, EVA Air, Flying Blue, JetBlue, Qantas, Qatar, Singapore KrisFlyer, Thai, Turkish, Virgin Atlantic/Virgin Red). Aeroplan is not on that list. Ratios are on a sign-in page we cannot read. source (October 8, 2026)

Frequently asked questions
Can I transfer US credit card points to Aeroplan?
Yes for the US programs that Aeroplan lists on its own conversion page; see the table above for the ratios and the date we read them.
Are Amex Membership Rewards in Canada and the US the same account?
See the rules above: they are separate programs and the points are not combined unless the issuer says otherwise.
Do Canadian cards charge a foreign transaction fee in the US?
Often 2.5% on top of the exchange rate, unless the issuer states otherwise on the card’s own page. Each card page shows the fee as the issuer states it, or “not stated”.
