The card and your spending

How this works. Rewards = your yearly spending in each category × the card’s earn rate, with points valued at our published point values (the same rates the rewards calculator uses). Spending caps are applied where we have them, and a “choose your category” card gets its top rate in your biggest eligible category only. Credits default to the dollar value of the card’s credits we count as usable; change it to what you would really use. The comparison is the no-annual-fee personal card that earns the most on the same spending (airline, hotel and cruise co-brand cards and secured cards are left out, because their rates only apply at one brand or need a deposit). The welcome bonus is counted in year one only, at our stated cash value.

Estimates for comparison, not financial advice. Offers, fees, rates and APRs are shown as stored in our database and can change at any time; confirm current terms on the issuer’s site before you apply. Partner links, where they exist, never change the results. Affiliate disclosure.

Frequently asked questions

How do I know if a credit card annual fee is worth it?

Add up the rewards you would earn on your real spending, plus the credits you would genuinely use, then subtract the fee. Compare that with the best no-fee card on the same spending. If the fee card still comes out ahead from year two, the fee is worth paying.

Should I count the welcome bonus?

For year one, yes, but a bonus is paid once. Judge the card on year two onward, when you only get the ongoing rewards and credits, because that is what you will pay the fee for every year after.

Are statement credits really worth their face value?

Only if you would have spent that money anyway. A $120 dining credit split into $10 monthly credits at specific restaurants is worth less than $120 if you have to change your habits to use it, so enter what you would actually use.

Can I get the annual fee waived?

Some issuers offer a retention credit or a downgrade to a no-fee card when you call to cancel. Those offers are not guaranteed and are not included here.
