Before you compare

Community banks and credit unions often price credit cards below the national issuers, with lower ongoing APRs and secured or starter cards that report to the credit bureaus. The trade-offs are membership rules at credit unions, smaller rewards programs and, at some institutions, application only through a branch or online banking. Check eligibility on the institution’s page before you apply. The score below compares every card on one scale, so a low-rate credit union card and a rewards card from a national bank can be read side by side.

Live Bank and Credit Union Card Rankings

Ranked by each card’s overall score, the same score our other rankings use. Every card is listed once per institution, so the same program card at two banks appears twice. Card data checked November 8, 2026 · 184 cards compared.

Credit union membership

Most credit unions ask you to join before you can apply for a card. Many let you qualify through where you live, work or worship, or through a small donation to a partner group. Each card’s notes list the membership area.

Credit unions anyone can join
Secured and starter cards

Many community institutions offer a secured card backed by a deposit in a savings account, or a low-limit starter card, for people building credit. Check that the issuer reports to all three credit bureaus.

Best secured cards
Before you apply
  • Low APRs: community issuers often price below the national banks
  • Smaller rewards: programs are simpler and the welcome offers smaller
  • How to apply: some require online banking or a branch visit
  • Annual fees: $0 to $99 across the 184 cards here

How this page is built

Every live consumer card from the community banks and credit unions we track beyond the large national issuers, as printed on each institution’s own site, that has an overall score. Business and store cards are left out. Sorted by each card’s overall score, the same score our other rankings use. Partner (affiliate) links never change which cards appear or their order; an Apply button may become a labelled partner link, but the ranking is the same either way.

Card details come from our database, which is verified against each issuer’s website; see our methodology, editorial policy and corrections policy.
