The Chase Freedom strategy — no-fee card with transfer power
Chase Freedom Unlimited and Freedom Flex earn Chase Ultimate Rewards points but cannot transfer to airlines on their own. However, if you also hold Chase Sapphire Preferred ($95/yr) or Sapphire Reserve ($795/yr), points earned on Freedom cards can be pooled and transferred to United, Southwest, British Airways, Air France Flying Blue, Singapore KrisFlyer, and 9 other airline and hotel programs at 1:1 ratios — 14 transfer partners total.
This makes the Freedom Unlimited the best no-fee companion card for travel — earn 1.5% on all spending, 3% on dining and drugstore, and 5% on Chase Travel, then route everything through your Sapphire account for transfer access. The strategic play: hold one Sapphire card to unlock the ecosystem, then put everyday spending on no-fee Freedom cards.
Without a Sapphire card: Freedom points redeem at 1¢ each for travel through Chase Travel, gift cards, or as cash back. Still useful but missing the airline transfer multiplier.
What you give up vs. a paid travel card
- No lounge access. Priority Pass, Amex Centurion, and Chase Sapphire Lounge access are only on cards with $395+ annual fees. Cheapest entry: Capital One Venture X at $395/yr.
- No free checked bags. Free first bag perks are exclusive to co-branded airline cards (Delta SkyMiles Gold, United Explorer, Aadvantage Platinum, etc.) — all carry annual fees.
- Lower earn on non-portal travel. Sapphire Preferred earns 2x on all travel (with no portal restriction). Freedom Unlimited earns 1.5x on non-Chase-Travel bookings. Over $5,000/yr in non-portal travel, that’s 2,500 extra points — worth ~$50 at 2¢ each through transfer partners.
- No travel credits or elite status. Statement credits for hotels, airlines, and rental cars are premium-card features only. Hyatt elite status from CSR, Hilton Diamond from Amex Aspire — all require annual fees.
- Weaker travel insurance. No-fee cards typically offer secondary rental car coverage and basic trip cancellation. Premium cards offer primary rental coverage and higher reimbursement caps.
