Best booking paths for London

#1 Best Value
British Airways Avios — off-peak zone pricing
British Airways uses zone-based Avios pricing. Off-peak economy from the US East Coast to LHR runs 22,500 Avios one-way; West Coast runs 30,000. Peak pricing is 27,500–37,500. Chase UR and Amex MR transfer to Avios at 1:1. Fuel surcharges apply on BA metal — typically $150–$250 per person one-way in economy.

#2 No Surcharges
Air Canada Aeroplan on British Airways or Virgin Atlantic
Aeroplan books British Airways and Virgin Atlantic transatlantic flights without fuel surcharges — a major advantage. Business class runs ~75,000–95,000 miles one-way. Economy ~25,000–35,000. Chase UR and Capital One both transfer to Aeroplan at 1:1.

Insider tips for London award travel

Tip 01 — Avios off-peak pricing
British Airways Avios uses off-peak and peak pricing. Off-peak dates (most of winter, early spring, late fall) run 22,500 Avios OW economy from the East Coast. Check the BA off-peak calendar before booking — the difference is 5,000–10,000 Avios per person.
Tip 02 — Aeroplan for surcharge-free
Fuel surcharges on BA metal can be $150–$350 one-way. Aeroplan books the same BA seats without surcharges. At the same award price, Aeroplan is almost always better. Chase UR and Capital One both transfer to Aeroplan at 1:1.
Tip 03 — Active bonuses now
Amex MR → Flying Blue is +25% through April 30 — useful if routing via Paris. Amex MR → Aeroplan is also +25% through April 30 for BA/Virgin surcharge-free bookings. Chase UR → Hyatt is +30% through May 6 for hotel redemptions.
Tip 04 — Card payment tips
Cards are accepted everywhere including the London Underground (contactless Visa/MC works for the Tube). Amex has lower acceptance at pubs and smaller shops — carry a Visa/MC backup. GBP, not EUR.
Tip 05 — Hotel strategy
IHG has the widest central London coverage. Hyatt options in London are limited but high value — Andaz London Liverpool Street and Great Northern Hotel. Marriott and Hilton also have central properties.
Tip 06 — Heathrow vs Gatwick
LHR has significantly more award availability than LGW. Most transatlantic award seats land at Terminal 3 or 5 (British Airways). Budget for the Heathrow Express (~£25 one-way) or Elizabeth Line (~£12) to central London.

London Award Travel FAQ

What is the best credit card for London travel?

The Chase Sapphire Preferred and Amex Platinum are the best London travel cards. Both transfer to British Airways Avios at 1:1 for direct LHR flights. For surcharge-free bookings, Chase UR and Capital One both transfer to Air Canada Aeroplan, which books the same BA and Virgin Atlantic seats without fuel surcharges.

How many Avios does it cost to fly to London?

Off-peak economy from the US East Coast to London Heathrow costs 22,500 Avios one-way. Peak pricing is 27,500. West Coast off-peak is 30,000. Business class one-way runs 68,000–85,000 Avios depending on peak/off-peak and routing.

What are fuel surcharges on British Airways award flights?

British Airways charges fuel surcharges (called “carrier-imposed charges”) on BA-operated flights. Economy surcharges run $100–$250 one-way; business class $200–$400. Booking through Air Canada Aeroplan eliminates these surcharges entirely on BA and Virgin Atlantic metal.

What hotel points are best for London?

IHG One Rewards has the widest central London coverage — InterContinental London Park Lane and multiple Holiday Inn Express properties. Chase UR transfers to IHG at 1:1. Hyatt has fewer London properties but Andaz Liverpool Street and Great Northern offer good value.

Can I use my credit card on the London Tube?

Yes. Contactless Visa and Mastercard work directly on the Underground — tap in and out at the barriers like an Oyster card. American Express is not accepted for Tube tap payments. Daily and weekly fare caps apply automatically when using contactless.

When should I book London award flights?

British Airways opens award space 355 days in advance. Economy off-peak space is generally available year-round. Business class on popular summer dates fills quickly — search at the 355-day mark. December is surprisingly affordable in Avios; summer (July–August) is most expensive.
