Best booking paths for Japan

#1 Best Value
ANA Business via Virgin Atlantic Flying Club
Virgin Atlantic uses a fixed zone chart for ANA: 52,500–60,000 pts one-way business from the US (West Coast cheaper). Book one-way on each direction for flexibility — unlike ANA’s own program which requires round-trips. Fuel surcharges of ~$200–400 apply on ANA metal. Watch for 20–30% transfer bonuses from Amex MR, Chase UR, Cap1, and Citi TY.
52,500–60,000 OW BizAmex MR → VirginChase UR → Virgin~2.0¢/pt
#2 Flexible
United MileagePlus — Dynamic pricing on ANA
Chase UR transfers to United at 1:1. United uses dynamic pricing — not a fixed chart — so 80,000 business one-way is possible but not guaranteed. Best for saver availability on ANA metal. Compare before transferring.
80k–120k OW BizChase UR → United~1.8¢/pt avg
#3 Great CPP
Singapore KrisFlyer on ANA or SQ metal
Transfers from Amex MR and Chase UR. Fly ANA or Singapore Airlines. 67,500–75,000 business one-way. KrisFlyer miles expire in 36 months — plan accordingly. Watch for transfer bonuses.
67,500–75,000 OW BizAmex MR → KrisFlyer~1.6¢/pt
#4 Budget Biz
Avios (British Airways) on JAL
Chase UR and Amex MR transfer to Avios at 1:1. Zone-based pricing — 60,000–70,000 business one-way to Japan. JAL is a solid Oneworld partner. Fuel surcharges apply on some routes.
60k–70k OW BizChase UR → AviosAmex MR → Avios~1.5¢/pt

Insider tips for Japan award travel

Tip 01 — Timing
ANA saver award space opens 355 days out. Set a calendar reminder and search the ANA website the moment the window opens — space disappears within hours for peak dates.
Tip 02 — Transfer bonuses
Virgin Atlantic runs 20–30% transfer bonuses from Amex MR, Chase UR, Cap1, and Citi TY periodically. A 30% bonus on 46,000 points covers a 60,000-point East Coast one-way. Check the live bonus panel above before any transfer.
Tip 03 — Airports
Tokyo has two airports: Narita (NRT) has more award availability but is farther from the city. Haneda (HND) is closer and more convenient — expect fewer award seats.
Tip 04 — Hotels strategy
World of Hyatt offers the best CPP (~1.09¢) for Japan. Osaka hotels are often cheaper in points than Tokyo. Check for a Chase UR → Hyatt transfer bonus before transferring — there is currently a 30% bonus through May 6, 2026.
Tip 05 — United vs ANA own
United MileagePlus uses dynamic pricing — no fixed chart. Business class to Japan ranges from 80,000–120,000 one-way depending on availability. Both Chase UR and Amex MR transfer to United at 1:1. Compare United and ANA Mileage Club pricing before transferring.
Tip 06 — Book early
Book at least 6–12 months ahead for cherry blossom (March–April) and fall foliage (Oct–Nov). Japan rail passes sell out months ahead — secure accommodation before flights.
